Imaging of Spatial Modes of One Dimensional Photonic Band Gap Devices using Near-field Scanning Optical Microscopy

چکیده
We have directly imaged the spatial modes inside a one-dimensional photonic band gap device using near-field scanning optical microscopy. Our results show large scattering at the transition between waveguide modes and lattice modes, as well as increased scattering for wavelengths within the stop band. Additionally, we present preliminary results on infrared imaging of the localized mode of a defect state at the center of the device. Eligible for Best Student

Internal Spatial Modes of One Dimensional Photonic Band Gap Devices Imaged with Near- eld Scanning Optical Microscopy
Scotland, United Kingdom Photonic band gap (PBG) devices have been used to improve optoelectronic device performance through modi cation of spontaneous emission, and are currently of much interest due to the control of the photonic state which incorporated defects can provide. The concept of defect localized photon states has led to the design of structures that guide light on the nanometer sca...
متن کاملA New Method for Calculating Propagation Modes of a One Dimensional Photonic Crystal (RESEARCH NOTE)
Photonic band-gap (PBG) crystals offer new dimensions of freedom in controlling propagation of electromagnetic waves. The existence of stop-bands in the transmission characteristic of these crystals makes them a suitable element for the realization of many useful microwave and optical subsystems. In this paper, we calculate the propagation constant of a one-dimensional (1-D) photonic crystal by...
متن کاملA Novel Structure for Optical Channel Drop Filter using Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystals with Square Lattice
In the present paper a novel structure for optical channel drop filter (CDF) based on photonic crystal ring resonator with circular core has been proposed. In order to design the proposed CDF, the plan wave expansion (PWE) method is applied for calculation of band structure and photonic band gap while the transmission characteristics of proposed CDF have been calculated using the finite differe...
متن کاملTheory of imaging a photonic crystal with transmission near - field optical microscopy
While near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) can provide optical images with resolution much better than the diffraction limit, analysis and interpretation of these images is often difficult. We present a theory of imaging with transmission NSOM that includes the effects of tip field, tip/sample coupling, light propagation through the sample and light collection. We apply this theory to ...
متن کاملNear-field scanning optical microscopy as a simultaneous probe of fields and band structure of photonic crystals: A computational study
We demonstrate the feasibility of employing near-field scanning optical microscopy ~NSOM! imaging to simultaneously obtain both the eigenfield distribution and the band-structure information of a photonic crystal. We introduce the NSOM measurement configuration required and simulate the imaging process, with both the tip and the sample included, using three-dimensional finite-difference time-do...
